Ron tried to mount a hose reel bracket to his patio with a regular wood screw, on the theory that a screw is a screw and concrete is basically just a really committed kind of dirt. The screw snapped clean in half before it got a quarter inch in. Concrete wasn’t being difficult. It was just never going to accept a fastener that wasn’t actually built for it, no matter how much confidence Ron brought to the drill.
Concrete has no give — it doesn’t compress or flex around a fastener the way wood does, which means the usual approach of muscling a screw in until it seats simply doesn’t work here. The good news: once you’re using the right screw and the right bit, this stops being a fight and turns into a fairly ordinary weekend task.
🔩 Concrete Screws, Not Regular Screws
Concrete screws (sold under names like Tapcon, hardened and threaded specifically to cut into concrete, brick, and block) are the standard choice for most household jobs — shelves, brackets, railings, outdoor fixtures. They cut their own threads directly into a pre-drilled hole, no separate anchor required, and they’re easy to back out and reposition if you get the spot wrong. For genuinely heavy loads or crumbly, weaker concrete, an expansion anchor (a sleeve that spreads and grips the surrounding concrete from the inside as its bolt is tightened) offers more holding power, but it’s overkill for the average bracket or shelf. Regular wood or drywall screws are never the answer here — they’re too soft, and concrete will snap them before they’ve done any useful work.

Mark the exact spot with a pencil, not a pen — concrete resists pencil far better and you won’t lose your mark to a wet surface. Chuck a carbide-tipped masonry bit (sized to match the screw’s diameter) into a hammer drill (a drill with a pounding, percussive action layered onto the spin, purpose-built for punching through masonry) and drill straight in, slightly deeper than the screw’s length, letting the hammer action do the work rather than leaning your body weight into it. Then comes the step everyone wants to skip: clean the hole completely, with a shop vacuum, compressed air, or at minimum a stiff brush — leftover dust in the hole is the single biggest reason a concrete screw fails to grip. Finally, drive the screw with an impact driver or drill/driver, straight and steady, stopping the moment the head seats flush. A little resistance going in is normal; a sudden squeal or bind usually means dust is still in the hole or the bit wandered off-angle — back out, clean again, and try once more rather than forcing it.
🧯 Worth Taking Seriously
Concrete chips fly when drilled, and they’re sharp — safety glasses aren’t optional here. A hammer drill is genuinely loud enough to warrant hearing protection for more than a hole or two, and masonry dust is fine enough to justify a dust mask on any job bigger than a handful of holes. If you’re drilling into a wall or slab that might have electrical conduit or plumbing behind it, that’s worth confirming before you start — concrete doesn’t announce what’s hiding a few inches in.

Skipping the pilot hole cleanout is the single most common reason a properly installed concrete screw still ends up loose. It’s the least satisfying step — nothing to show for thirty seconds of vacuuming — which is exactly why it’s the one people skip, and exactly why it’s the one that actually determines whether the screw holds.
