Aviation Snip Colors: What Red, Green, and Yellow Mean

Aviation shears, also called aviation snips or tin snips, come in three handle colors, and the color isn’t decoration. Red cuts to the left, green cuts to the right, and yellow cuts straight. The right color keeps the metal from binding, leaves a smooth edge, and saves your hand. This chart shows which to grab for each cut, how to cut in short bites, and what the shears can and can’t handle. It also explains why they’re sold as a set of three.

One-page chart showing what red, green, and yellow aviation shears cut: left curves, right curves, and straight lines.
